Facet Ablation

Our minimally invasive facet ablation treats pain from arthritis in the spine. It targets the small nerves that carry pain from the facet joints, the joints along the back of the spine closest to the skin, without disturbing the surrounding muscles. For many patients with chronic neck or back pain, it provides long-lasting relief.

What Is Facet Ablation?

The spine has a series of facet joints along its back, closest to the skin. When these joints become arthritic, they can cause chronic pain and limited mobility in the neck and back. Facet ablation uses targeted heat to interrupt the small medial branch nerves that carry pain signals from those joints.

Because it targets the source of the pain without disturbing the surrounding muscles or nerves, facet ablation is a minimally invasive option for patients with spinal arthritis whose pain has been confirmed with medial branch blocks or facet injections.

Conditions Facet Ablation Treats

Who Is A Candidate?

Patients who endure chronic pain and limited mobility in the neck and back due to arthritis in the spine may be candidates. Before ablation, diagnostic blocks confirm that the facet joints are the source of pain.

How Facet Ablation Works

Facet ablation is an outpatient procedure:

  1. 1

    Confirm the source

Diagnostic blocks confirm the facet joints as the pain generator.

  2. 2

    Numbing and guidance

A local anesthetic is given and imaging guides the probe.

  3. 3

    Targeted heat

Heat is applied to the small nerves carrying pain from the joint.

  4. 4

    Home the same day

Most patients return home shortly after the procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is facet ablation?

Facet ablation is a minimally invasive procedure that uses targeted heat to interrupt the small nerves that carry pain signals from arthritic facet joints, relieving chronic neck or back pain.

What are facet joints?

Facet joints are the small joints along the back of the spine, closest to the skin, that connect the vertebrae and allow bending and twisting.

Who is a candidate for facet ablation?

Patients with chronic neck or back pain from facet joint arthritis, usually confirmed by diagnostic facet injections or medial branch blocks, are candidates.

How long does the relief last?

Relief often lasts for many months, and in some cases longer. Nerves can regenerate over time, and the procedure can be repeated if pain returns.

Does facet ablation disturb the surrounding muscles?

The procedure is designed to target the source of pain without disturbing the surrounding muscles or other nerves.

What symptoms can facet ablation relieve?

It can relieve localized neck or low back pain, persistent tenderness, stiffness and limited movement, and pain that radiates into the buttock and leg or shoulder and arm.

Is facet ablation the same as radiofrequency ablation?

Both use heat to interrupt the nerves carrying joint pain. Radiofrequency ablation is one common way of performing ablation of the facet joint nerves.

Symptoms Facet Ablation Can Relieve

Symptoms of facet arthritis vary from person to person. The most common include:

  • Acute pain, localized in the neck or lower back, ranging from almost constant to a few times a month.
  • Persistent tenderness at the site of the arthritis.
  • Limited movement and flexibility, often with more pain bending backward than forward.
  • Radiating pain into the buttock and leg, or the shoulder and arm.
  • Stiffness in the spine.
