James S. Manzanares, MD

Dr. James S. Manzanares is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon and fellowship-trained spine surgeon with more than two decades of experience caring for patients throughout Florida. Trained at Mayo and Johns Hopkins, and a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Dr. Manzanares brings advanced spine reconstruction expertise and a lifelong commitment to service to every patient he treats.

Doctor Biography:

Dr. Manzanares earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from New Mexico State University. He went on to Mayo Medical School in Rochester, Minnesota, where he earned his Doctor of Medicine, and completed a predoctoral fellowship in molecular neurosciences at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine. He then completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine.

Following residency, Dr. Manzanares completed a pediatric orthopaedic fellowship at Nemours Children’s Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. He later completed an advanced spine reconstruction fellowship in the Division of Spine Surgery at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, where he also served as a faculty member in the Departments of Orthopaedic Surgery and Neurosurgery.

Over the course of his career, Dr. Manzanares has practiced at leading institutions and practices including Johns Hopkins, Nemours Children’s Clinic, Miami Children’s Hospital, and Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota, as well as spine and orthopaedic practices in Naples, Kissimmee, and Orlando. He has been licensed to practice in Florida since 2001.

Dr. Manzanares is actively involved in advancing spine surgery. His technique development work includes an L5/S1 lateral access retractor and an approach for inserting pedicle screws using a 30mm awl and cannulated dilators, developed with Spinewave Corp. He has presented internationally on the role of stem cells in spinal fusion and has published on topics including the origins of back pain in children and adolescents, osteochondral lesions of the talar dome, and surgical treatment of chronic olecranon bursitis. He is a member of both the K2M and NuVasive Complex Spine Deformity Study Groups and the Society of Lateral Access Surgeons.

Dr. Manzanares also served his country as a Major in the United States Army Reserve. In 2004 he was activated for Operation Iraqi Freedom with the 629th Medical Detachment Forward Surgical. His decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, the Iraqi Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary and Service Medals, and the 1st Infantry Division Combat Patch for performance of duties under hostile fire.

Originally from Las Vegas, New Mexico, Dr. Manzanares speaks Spanish and has a long record of service to underserved communities, including participation in migrant worker health care delivery during medical school.
